Deleting your WhatsApp account takes about a minute, but it can’t be undone, and it wipes more than most people expect: your chat history, your groups and your cloud backup. Uninstalling the app does none of that. This guide shows the exact steps, what happens to your data, and what to save before you start.
Short answer: open WhatsApp → Settings → Account → Delete account, enter your phone number with the country code, and confirm. Before you do, back up or export any chats you want to keep, because deleting the account also deletes your WhatsApp backup in Google Drive or iCloud.

Delete your account or just uninstall the app?
These are very different things:
| Uninstall the app | Delete your account | |
|---|---|---|
| Your account still exists | Yes | No |
| People can still message you | Yes, messages wait until you reinstall | No |
| Your groups | You stay in them | You’re removed from all of them |
| Your cloud backup | Kept, you can restore it later | Deleted |
| Can you undo it? | Yes, just reinstall | No |
If you only want a break, or you’re moving to a new phone, don’t delete your account. Uninstall the app or, better, transfer your chats to the new phone. If you’re changing your phone number, use Settings → Account → Change number instead, which keeps your chats and groups.
Before you delete: save what you want to keep
Once the account is gone, your chats can’t be recovered by anyone, including WhatsApp. Take five minutes to save what matters.
Export important chats
On Android, open a chat, tap the three dots → More → Export chat. Choose Include media or Without media, then save the file to Google Drive, email it to yourself or send it to your computer. You get a readable text file with the messages, which you can keep forever. Repeat for each chat you want.
Save photos and videos
Media you received is usually already in your phone’s gallery or in the WhatsApp folder on your phone. Deleting the account doesn’t remove files already saved on the phone, but copy important ones to your computer or cloud storage to be safe.
Download your account information (optional)
Go to Settings → Account → Request account info and tap Request report. WhatsApp prepares a report of your account details and settings, usually within about three days. Note that this report does not include your messages; export chats for that.
How to delete your WhatsApp account on Android
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top-right corner, then Settings.
- Tap Account.
- Tap Delete account (some older versions call it Delete my account).
- Choose your country and enter your full phone number. For Bangladesh, that’s +880 followed by your number.
- Tap Delete account. WhatsApp may ask why you’re leaving; pick a reason or skip it.
- Confirm by tapping Delete account again.
The app returns to the welcome screen. You can now uninstall it.
On an iPhone the steps are the same, except Settings is in the bottom-right corner of the app.
What deleting your account actually does
According to WhatsApp, deleting your account:
- Deletes your account from WhatsApp’s servers, along with your profile photo and About info.
- Removes you from all your WhatsApp groups.
- Deletes your message history on that phone.
- Deletes your WhatsApp backup in Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone).
A few things it does not do:
- Messages you already sent stay with the people you sent them to. Their copies of your chats aren’t affected.
- It isn’t instant behind the scenes. WhatsApp says it can take up to 90 days from the start of the process to delete your information from its systems, and some data, such as certain log records, may be kept longer where the law requires it.
- It doesn’t delete linked Meta accounts. If you connected WhatsApp to Meta’s Accounts Center, your Facebook and Instagram accounts are separate and stay as they are.
Your phone was lost or stolen: deactivate instead
You can’t use Delete account without the phone. If the phone is lost or stolen, do this instead:
- Block the SIM. Contact your mobile operator (Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink or Teletalk) to block the lost SIM and get a replacement with the same number.
- Log in on a new phone. Install WhatsApp on another phone and verify your number with the new SIM. Your account can only be active on one phone at a time, so this logs out the lost one.
- If you can’t get the SIM back yet, email support@whatsapp.com with the subject “Lost/Stolen: Please deactivate my account” and your full number in international format (for example +880 1XXX XXXXXX) in the message.
A deactivated account can be reactivated by verifying the number again within 30 days. After that it’s deleted. Your chats may still be visible on the lost phone itself, so also check your WhatsApp linked devices once you’re back in and log out of WhatsApp Web anywhere you left it open.
Can you recover a deleted WhatsApp account?
No. Once deletion is complete, the account, the groups and the backup are gone. You can register a new account with the same number later, but it starts empty: no chats, no groups, no old backup. That’s why the export step above matters. If you deleted chats by mistake rather than the whole account, there may still be options; see how to recover deleted WhatsApp messages.
The short version
Go to Settings → Account → Delete account, enter your number and confirm. It removes you from every group and deletes your chats and your Google Drive or iCloud backup, so export important chats first. If you’re only changing phones or numbers, don’t delete: transfer your chats or use Change number. If your phone is lost, block the SIM and log in on a new phone, or email WhatsApp to deactivate it.
