You used WhatsApp Web on an office computer, a cyber café PC or a friend’s laptop, and walked away without logging out. Now that browser has full access to your chats. You don’t need to go back to that computer. You can log it out from your phone in under a minute, and the moment you do, the chats vanish from that screen.
Here is how to do it on Android and iPhone, what to do if you no longer have your phone, and how to avoid the problem next time.
Log out WhatsApp Web from your phone
On Android
- Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right.
- Tap Linked devices.
- Tap the device you want to remove. A browser session shows the browser and operating system, for example “Google Chrome (Windows)”.
- Tap Log out, then confirm.
On iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and tap Settings at the bottom right.
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Tap the device, then Log Out.
That’s it. Nothing needs to happen on the other computer. The session is ended on WhatsApp’s side, so even if the browser is still open, it immediately returns to the QR code login page and the chats are gone from the screen.
Which device is the one you left open?
If several devices are listed, look at two things. The name tells you the browser and system, so an office PC running Edge on Windows will look different from your own Chrome laptop. The activity line under each name shows Active now or when it was last active, which usually matches when you sat at that computer.
Still not sure? Log out of all of them. It costs you nothing but a QR scan the next time you open WhatsApp on your own computer. If you want to understand what each entry means in more detail, see how to check who else has access to your WhatsApp.
What the other person can see before you log out
It’s worth knowing what was exposed so you can decide what to do next. While a WhatsApp Web session is open, anyone at that computer can read the chats that synced to it, see new messages as they arrive, send messages from your account and open photos and documents that were shared.
Once you log out, they lose all of that. They can’t see what you were doing on that computer afterwards and they can’t log back in without your phone. But anything they already read or downloaded can’t be taken back, so if the computer was somewhere public, it is worth telling close contacts to ignore any strange messages from you in that window of time.
If you don’t have your phone
Logging out remotely needs your main phone, because that is where the list of linked devices lives. If your phone is lost, stolen or broken:
- Get your SIM back first. Ask your mobile operator for a replacement SIM with the same number.
- Install WhatsApp on another phone and register with your number using the SMS code. Your account moves to the new phone and the old phone is logged out.
- Open Linked devices on the new phone and log out anything still listed.
Linked devices are also logged out automatically if your main phone isn’t used for about 14 days, but don’t rely on that. Two weeks is a long time for someone to have your chats.
How to log out properly next time
On a computer you don’t own, log out from the browser itself before you leave:
- In WhatsApp Web, click the three-dot menu (⋮) or the settings icon.
- Click Log out and confirm.
- Close the browser window.
Two habits make this almost automatic:
- Use a private window on shared computers (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome and Edge). WhatsApp still needs you to log out properly, but the browser won’t keep the session’s stored data after you close the window.
- Check Linked devices on your phone as you walk away. If the computer you just used is still there, tap it and log out. It’s the same ten seconds either way, and it works even if you forgot to log out on the computer.
The short version
On your phone, open Linked devices, tap the computer you left open and tap Log out. It takes effect instantly, wherever that computer is. If you don’t have your phone, get a replacement SIM and register WhatsApp on another phone first. For a full walkthrough of logging in and staying safe, read our WhatsApp Web login guide.
