ChatGPT “Network Error” or “Something Went Wrong”? How to Fix It

Illustration of a chat window with a weak signal and an error mark

You’re halfway through a long answer and ChatGPT stops with “Network error” or “Something went wrong”. Sometimes it happens once; sometimes it happens on every long reply. The cause is usually one of three things: your connection, your browser, or OpenAI’s servers. Here’s how to tell which, and fix it.

Short answer: first check status.openai.com. If everything is green, refresh the page and resend. If the error keeps happening on long answers, ask for a shorter reply, turn off your VPN, and try a private browser window or the ChatGPT mobile app.

What each ChatGPT error message means

ChatGPT shows several different error messages, and the exact words tell you a lot about the cause. Find yours below, then jump to the matching step. The wording changes a little from time to time, so look for the closest match.

Error messageWhat it usually meansTry first
“Network error”The answer was cut off while streaming, usually on a long reply or a shaky connectionRegenerate, then ask for a shorter answer (Step 3)
“Something went wrong. If this issue persists please contact us through our help center”A general server or session errorRefresh and check the status page (Steps 1 and 2)
“There was an error generating a response”The reply failed partway throughRegenerate; if it repeats, start a new chat
“Hmm… something seems to have gone wrong”A temporary glitch loading the chat or the replyRefresh the page or reopen the conversation
“Error in message stream”The connection dropped while the answer was arrivingTurn off your VPN and switch networks (Step 4)
“Too many requests” or “You’ve reached our limit”You hit a usage or rate limit, not a network faultWait for the time shown or switch models (Step 7)
“Unable to load conversation”That chat’s history didn’t loadRefresh, try the app, or log out and back in
“Our systems have detected unusual activity”An automated security check, often set off by a VPN or a shared networkTurn off the VPN or try another network

If you see a different message, the same order of fixes below still applies: check the status page, retry, then work through your connection and browser.

Step 1: Check if ChatGPT itself is down

Open status.openai.com. If it shows an outage or “degraded performance” for ChatGPT, the problem isn’t on your side and nothing you change will fix it. Wait, then try again later. Large outages are usually fixed within an hour or two.

If the status page is all green, continue.

Step 2: Retry the simple way

  1. Click Regenerate (or resend your message).
  2. If that fails, refresh the page with F5 (or pull down to refresh in the app).
  3. Copy anything important from the conversation first. A refresh normally keeps the chat, but the half-finished answer may disappear.

A surprising number of network errors are one-off hiccups that a single retry clears.

Step 3: If it fails on long answers, ask for shorter ones

The classic version of this error appears when ChatGPT is generating a very long response: a full article, long code, a big table. The longer the answer streams, the more chances a brief connection drop has to break it.

Try:

  • Asking for the answer in parts: “Write the first three sections only, then wait.”
  • Setting a length: “Answer in under 300 words.”
  • For code: “Only show the changed function, not the whole file.”

If shorter answers work every time, you’ve found the cause. Long answers aren’t forbidden, but your connection isn’t holding a long stream.

Step 4: Check your connection, VPN and network

  • Turn off your VPN or proxy and try again. VPNs are one of the most common causes, especially free ones. If you need a VPN, try a server in a different location.
  • Switch networks. Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way round. On mobile data, a weak signal causes exactly this error during long replies.
  • Office and school networks sometimes block or interrupt AI sites. Try your phone’s hotspot to test.
  • Restart the router if other websites are also slow.

Step 5: Fix the browser

If ChatGPT works on your phone but not on your computer, the browser is the problem.

  1. Open a private window (Ctrl + Shift + N in Chrome and Edge). If ChatGPT works there, an extension or stored site data is the cause.
  2. Disable extensions one at a time, especially ad blockers, VPN extensions, privacy tools and “AI helper” extensions that inject themselves into ChatGPT.
  3. Clear site data for chatgpt.com only: click the icon to the left of the address bar โ†’ Site settings (or Cookies and site data) โ†’ clear. You’ll need to log in again.
  4. Update your browser. An outdated browser can struggle with the newer interactive answers ChatGPT started showing with GPT-6 in October 2026.

Step 6: Try the app

The official ChatGPT apps for Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac often keep working when a browser doesn’t. If you’re on the web, try the app; if you’re in the app, try the web. Note that OpenAI’s newest interactive answer features don’t work in the older Windows and Mac desktop clients, so update the desktop app if you use it.

Step 7: Are you hitting a limit instead?

Sometimes what looks like an error is actually a usage limit. On the Free plan, text chats are unlimited, but uploads, image generation and some tools are capped. If the message mentions a limit or a time to try again, that’s what’s happening, not a network problem. See our comparison of ChatGPT Free vs Plus for what each plan includes.

Still not working?

  • Log out of ChatGPT and log back in.
  • Try a different device entirely to rule out your computer.
  • If nothing works for a day or more and the status page is green, contact OpenAI through the help option in your ChatGPT settings, with the time the error happened and what you were doing.

The short version

Check status.openai.com first. If it’s green, retry and refresh. For errors on long answers, ask for shorter replies or parts. Then turn off your VPN, switch networks, test in a private window, disable extensions and clear chatgpt.com’s site data, or use the app instead. If you’re using ChatGPT for work, it’s also worth knowing what ChatGPT does with your chats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does ChatGPT keep saying network error?

Usually because of an unstable connection during long answers, a VPN or browser extension interfering, or an outage on OpenAI's side. Check status.openai.com first.

How do I fix ChatGPT network error on long responses?

Ask for shorter answers or for the answer in parts, and use a stable Wi-Fi connection without a VPN.

Is ChatGPT down right now?

Check status.openai.com. If it shows an outage, wait and try again later because nothing on your side will fix it.

Does clearing cache fix ChatGPT errors?

It can. Clear the site data for chatgpt.com only, then log in again. Testing in a private window first shows whether stored data or an extension is the cause.

Is the ChatGPT app more reliable than the website?

Often, yes. If the website keeps failing, try the official mobile or desktop app, and keep it updated.
