If you have a personal number and a work number, or a second SIM for family abroad, you don’t need two phones to use WhatsApp on both. There are three legitimate ways to run two WhatsApp accounts on one Android phone, and one popular way you should avoid.
Short answer: use WhatsApp’s own Add account feature. It’s built into the app, needs no extra install, and keeps both accounts fully supported. The other two methods are useful only in specific situations, which this guide explains.
What you need first
Every WhatsApp account is tied to a phone number, so you need a second number that can receive an SMS or call for the verification code. A dual-SIM phone with both SIMs inserted makes this easy. The second SIM doesn’t have to stay in the phone afterwards, but you’ll need it again if you ever reinstall WhatsApp or move to a new phone, so keep it active.
You cannot use the same number for two accounts. If what you actually want is the same account on a second phone, that’s a different feature: you can link a second phone as a linked device. See how linked devices work.
Method 1: WhatsApp’s built-in Add account (recommended)
Since late 2023, WhatsApp on Android lets you add a second account inside the same app. It reached iPhone in 2026.
- Open WhatsApp and go to Settings (โฎ menu at the top right โ Settings).
- Tap the arrow next to your name at the top of the Settings screen.
- Tap Add account, then Agree and continue.
- Enter the second number and verify it with the code WhatsApp sends.
- Set up the profile name and photo for the new account.
To switch between accounts, tap the same arrow and choose the other account. Each account has its own chats, privacy settings, notifications and backups. WhatsApp currently allows two accounts in one app.
Why this is the best option: it’s official, it gets every update automatically, and both accounts can be backed up and restored like normal. There’s nothing extra to install.
Method 2: WhatsApp Business as the second app
WhatsApp Business is a separate free app from Meta. You can install it alongside regular WhatsApp and register your second number in it. Despite the name, nothing stops you using it for personal chats.
It makes sense if the second number really is for a shop or side business, because you also get a business profile, quick replies, labels for chats and automatic away messages. The icon is different too, which makes it easy to tell the two apps apart.
The downside is that you now have two apps to update, and your contacts see a small business label on your profile.
Method 3: Your phone’s app clone feature
Many Android phones can run a second copy of any app. On Realme phones this is usually under Settings โ Apps โ App Clone (Samsung calls it Dual Messenger, Xiaomi calls it Dual Apps). Turn it on for WhatsApp, open the clone, and register your second number.
This works, but it was the workaround people used before WhatsApp added Method 1. Cloned apps can be less predictable with notifications and backups, and the clone feature depends on your phone brand. Use it only if Add account doesn’t appear on your phone.
The one to avoid: GB WhatsApp and other mods
Apps like GB WhatsApp, FM WhatsApp and WhatsApp Plus promise a second account plus extra features. They are unofficial copies built by unknown developers. WhatsApp actively bans accounts that use them, sometimes temporarily and sometimes for good, and because they’re downloaded from random websites, they’re a common way for malware to get onto phones. They also see every message you send.
There is no reason to take that risk now that WhatsApp supports two accounts itself.
Which method should you use?
| Add account | WhatsApp Business | App clone | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official | Yes | Yes | Phone feature |
| Extra app | No | Yes | Copy of WhatsApp |
| Business tools | No | Yes | No |
| Backups work normally | Yes | Yes | Usually |
| Works on all phones | Android and iPhone | Yes | Depends on brand |
For most people: Add account. If the second number is for a business: WhatsApp Business. Only if neither works on your phone: App clone.
The short version
Get a second number that can receive a code, open WhatsApp Settings, tap the arrow next to your name, and choose Add account. Switch accounts from the same arrow. Stay away from GB WhatsApp and other modded apps, which can get both of your numbers banned. If you want to use WhatsApp on your computer as well, start with our WhatsApp Web login guide.
