If you own a Google Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, October 2026 marks the end of Google’s promised updates. The phone won’t stop working, but it will stop getting regular security fixes, and that changes how safe it is for banking, email and passwords. Here’s exactly what ends, what still works, how long the Pixel 6a and other Pixels are supported, and what to do next.
Short answer: Google’s five-year support for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro ends in October 2026. The October 2026 update (security patch October 5, 2026) is most likely their last scheduled update. Your phone keeps working, but new security holes won’t be patched. Install the final update now, keep your apps updated, and plan to upgrade within the next few months. The Pixel 6a is supported until mid-2027.
Applies to: Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro (launched October 2021), with notes on the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7 series. Checked October 27, 2026.
What end of support means

| Still works | Stops |
|---|---|
| Calls, texts, Wi-Fi, camera | Monthly Android security patches |
| Your installed apps | New Android versions and Pixel Drop features |
| Play Store app updates, for now | Fixes for newly found vulnerabilities |
| Google Play system updates, for a while | Guaranteed bug fixes from Google |
Over time, some apps (often banking and payment apps) stop supporting phones that no longer get security updates. That usually takes a year or more, but it does happen.
Pixel update end dates

| Phone | Launched | Updates guaranteed until |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 6 / Pixel 6 Pro | October 2021 | October 2026 |
| Pixel 6a | July 2022 | Mid-2027 |
| Pixel 7 / Pixel 7 Pro | October 2022 | October 2027 |
| Pixel 7a | May 2023 | May 2028 |
| Pixel 8 and later | 2023 onward | 7 years from launch |
Step 1: Install the final update

- Open Settings → System → Software updates → System update.
- Tap Check for update and install anything waiting.
- Then check Security & privacy → System & updates → Google Play system update.
Your security patch level should show October 5, 2026 after the update. Google rolls updates out in stages by carrier and device, so it may take a few days to appear.
Step 2: Keep using it safely (for now)
You don’t have to stop using a Pixel 6 tomorrow. To reduce the risk while you plan an upgrade:
- Keep apps updated in the Play Store, including Chrome. App updates still fix many problems.
- Only install apps from the Play Store, and turn off Install unknown apps for every app.
- Use a screen lock and two-step verification on your Google account.
- Avoid sideloaded APKs and modded apps completely.
- Watch for banking app warnings. If your bank says your device is no longer supported, that’s your cue to switch.
Step 3: Plan your upgrade
- When: within the next few months is sensible for a phone you use for banking or work. For a backup phone or a kids’ music player, there’s no rush.
- What: newer Pixels (Pixel 8 and later) get seven years of updates, so they’ll last far longer than the Pixel 6 did.
- Trade-in: check Google Store and your carrier for trade-in credit before the value drops further.
When you switch, back up first: here’s how to back up an Android phone, then factory reset the old one before you sell or trade it in.
What about the Pixel 6a?
The Pixel 6a uses the same Tensor chip but launched later, so it gets updates until mid-2027. Keep installing updates as normal, and plan an upgrade for next year.
